Scientists of Color: One Woman Empowering the Future of STEM - Dermafirm USA

Chevy Humphrey made history in early October as the first Black woman president/CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago. The MSI’s mission is to “inspire and motivate children to achieve their full potential in science, technology, medicine and engineering.” Their various programs and initiatives aid underprivileged children, teachers, and families alike in learning about the past, present, and future of STEM.

In response to her new title, Humphrey expressed “I’m excited for the opportunity to actually provide science and education to people of all ages, especially kids and teachers.” As the US continues to struggle with STEM education compared to the rest of the world, Humphrey’s education initiatives are more important now than ever. By continuing to increase the number of opportunities that the museum provides for Chicago’s youth, Humphrey is opening doors for the future leaders of STEM. Given the underrepresentation of Black women in STEM careers, this announcement is especially powerful. Humphrey is becoming a role model for the next generation of minorities in STEM, as well as a leader in the push for bridging the diversity gap.

Congratulations Chevy Humphrey for breaking down barriers and being the catalyst for change in the lives of children throughout the US!
