Meet two female chemists who are combining their passion for science, the arts, and education to support students facing a lack of educational resources amidst a global pandemic.

Deirdre Roberson and Dr. Alecia Gabriel founded Motor City S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) as a new way to educate minorities and underrepresented students in STEM and art-related subjects. Based out of Detroit Michigan, they are seeking to create a new normal where "advanced degrees in STEAM will no longer be accomplishments, but the standard" for students of color. Their services feature specialized events, summer camps, and other methods of providing students with the resources to spark their passion for STEAM.
Recently Motor City S.T.E.A.M released the Lab Drawer, a monthly subscription box featuring unique DIY experiments. These kits have become vital in educating students at home during the global pandemic. As many parents struggle to fill the role of both caretakers and teachers, the Lab Drawer is offering an easy solution. Step by step instructions are simplified utilizing technology that kids are already familiar with, such as the social media platform TikTok. In addition, a portion of the profits generated from the subscription is donated to children in need who cannot obtain necessary materials, funds, and other resources to further their STEAM education.
We are honored to feature Deirdre Roberson and Dr. Alecia Gabriel as part of our initiative to highlight women of color in STEM from the past and present. Their work is shaping the future of STEAM-related industries and creating new strategies for parents struggling with pandemic-related educational issues. We are eager to see what they will accomplish next and wish them the best of luck in the future!
